I’m the CEO and Founder of Virtual Networkers. I’m also a wife, mom, pet parent, house manager, and low-energy introvert, and I’m navigating perimenopause.
Sound familiar? No wonder we get overwhelmed!
When overwhelm triggers a stress response, I know I need to take action. Here are my top three strategies for dealing with overwhelm:
1. I Make a List
Often, overwhelm strikes when my brain is in overdrive, creating a mental to-do list. I start to panic, worried I’ll forget something or won’t have enough time.
That’s when I pause and write everything down. Seeing it on paper relieves my mind from remembering it all and lets me prioritize. Often, I realize it’s not as much as I feared.
2. I Use a Favorite Affirmation
When my mind starts to spiral, I interrupt the pattern with an affirmation. Here’s my go-to, adapted from Louise Hay: “Time expands for me. I have enough time to accomplish everything.” It’s an instant stress-buster!
3. I Protect My Energy
I have generalized anxiety disorder, so I guard my thoughts carefully. Overwhelm can fuel anxiety, pulling me into needless worries about the future. When this happens, I ground myself in the present moment.
I remind myself: Right now, everything is okay. I do a quick sensory inventory—what am I seeing, smelling, hearing, feeling, tasting? This practice is like hitting the reset button.
